We’ve had two confirmed reports in the last few weeks of local dogs poisoned by toxic mushrooms in our area. One was hospitalized and recovered. The other, despite prompt and extensive medical intervention, sadly passed away.
It can be very difficult for most of us to tell which mushrooms are safe and which are dangerous. Our best advice is to try to keep your pups away from all of them if you can.
Signs of mushroom toxicity in dogs can include:
- Vomiting
- Diarrhea
- Stomach pain
- Excessive salivation and drooling
- Lethargy
- Wobbling and loss of balance
- Yellowing of the white of the eyes or skin and gums
- Seizures
- Increased or decreased urination
When in doubt, an urgent trip to a veterinarian is in order. Time is of the essence.
