Hewey

Hewey is a five-month-old German Shepherd puppy who’s had a pretty rough go of things during his first months of life.

Sadly, Hewey was hit by a car. The veterinarian discovered a fracture to his femur, which has since been surgically repaired. He’s doing extremely well and is bearing weight on the leg very nicely now. The vet noted a couple minor pelvic fractures that should heal on their own.

We’ve been doing Hewey’s recommend physical therapy (which isn’t strenuous at all — it just involves moving his leg around into a few positions once or twice a day to ensure that he heals with maximum range of motion). His adopter will need to be committed to continuing the therapy for a while longer.

Hewey will also come home with the remainder of his pain meds, to be given for the next couple weeks.

Hewey’s new person or family should be careful of his leg until he’s fully healed (no strenuous hikes or doing zoomies on the beach for a couple more months, please), and know that he might develop arthritis a bit younger than an uninjured dog would. Giving daily supplements like gluocasmine would be a terrific idea.
